Hildewintera colademononis (Cleistocactus winteri)

Hildewintera colademononis, commonly known as the Monkey Tail Cactus, is a unique and eye-catching cactus native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. It naturally grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte on rocky slopes and cliff faces, where it enjoys bright light and excellent drainage. This species is known for its long, trailing stems densely covered in soft, white, hair-like spines that resemble a monkey’s tail—hence the name. In spring and summer, mature plants produce vibrant red to deep pink tubular flowers, adding to their ornamental appeal. The Monkey Tail Cactus prefers bright, indirect light or morning sun and should be grown in a well-draining cactus mix. Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, and reduce watering in winter to prevent root rot. It thrives in hanging baskets, where its stems can cascade freely, and benefits from occasional feeding with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer during active growth.
