Taking Care Of Plants: Monstera

March 18, 2022

One beautiful thing we got out of COVID-19 lockdowns is that we’ve grown a deep appreciation for plants and because many people were stuck indoors, collecting indoor plants has become quite a popular hobby. One very common indoor plant is Monstera and maybe it’s because it is easy to take care of it. If you’re looking to buy a Monstera plant, here are a few things you’ll need to know:

Know The Soil That It Needs

Monsteras can be sensitive to water, especially if it is being overwatered which makes the soil wet and damp. So generally, these plants thrive better in soil that is only a bit moist and is able to be dried before the next time you water it.

What Seasons Are Best For Growing Monsteras?

Usually, monsteras can actively grow in spring and autumn as, during these two seasons, there isn’t heavy sunlight that will make the plants dry up and eventually die. So if you’re looking to buy a Monstera plant, it is highly recommended that you buy it during these two seasons if you want to see fast results.

Keeping An Eye Out For Pests

The great thing about Monsteras is that they are quite resistant to pests. But of course, just because they tend to be more resistant to pests than other types of plants, doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to find pests on the leaves. That’s why it is important that you check now and then to inspect how the plant is going.

How Can You Tell If It’s Overwatered Or Underwatered?

As mentioned earlier, Monsteras do not do well when overwatered, and as you can assume, underwatering won’t do it any good either. The trick to telling if it is overwatered or underwatered is if you notice that the leaves are turning yellow or not. If there’s a combination of yellow and brown on the leaves, it is a sign that you may have overwatered it. If it is predominately yellow and there are brown crisps on the edge of the leaves, it is probably underwatered. If you do notice that this is the case, just cut the yellow leaves off.

Fertilising Your Monstera Plant

Monsteras do not need to be fertisiled too often. Generally, you’ll only need to fertilise it once a month during the seasons of spring and summer. This will get the plant to grow a bit more with the help of sunlight.
